According to the CSIL Furniture Industry Report prepared by the Center for Industrial Studies (CSIL); The United States of America, which is the country that imports the most furniture in the world in 2021, together with Germany, France, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, constitutes the great power that directs the furniture industry.

The country, which has a liberal-capitalist market economy, is the second largest economy in the world in terms of purchasing power parity. Apart from being the world’s largest importer, the United States of America is an important and decisive economy in the world, as its economy has the power to directly affect the world economy.
Two basic elements that play a structural role in the American economy
In the US economy, which is shown as the largest example of the capitalist economic system worldwide, most of the production and services are provided by the private sector. There are two basic elements that play a structural role in the American economy. The first of these is rich natural resources, and the other is qualified workforce. With its fertile soils, rich mineral deposits, favorable climatic conditions and other natural resources, the USA has a very suitable environment for economic growth.
According to the preliminary data of the CSIL Furniture Sector Report prepared by the Center for Industrial Studies (CSIL); The USA ranked second in furniture production, sixth in exports, first in imports and second in domestic sales among the 100 countries subject to the report.
Furniture production of 62 billion dollars
America, which produced approximately 62 billion dollars of furniture in 2021, produced 56 billion dollars in 2020, 58 billion dollars in 2019, 59 billion dollars in 2018, 56 billion dollars in 2017 and 2016, 54 billion dollars in 2015 and in 2014 51 billion dollars, in 2013, 50 billion dollarrs in 2013 and 46 billion dollars in 2012. When the production figures in the report are examined, it is seen that America has achieved a stable growth in furniture production, except for 2019 and 2020, which are considered as pandemic years.
Canada is the country to which it exports the most
Analyzing the export data, it was seen that the USA realized a total of 4 billion dollars of exports at the end of 2021. The United States of America, which exports furniture at an average annual level of 4 billion dollars from 2012 to 2021,the country to which it exports the most in 2021 was Canada with 58 percent. It was followed by Mexico (12%), the UK (3.2%), Japan (1.6%), Germany and China (1.4%), Saudi Arabia (1.3%), Australia and the United Arab Emirates (1.2%), and the Netherlands (1%).
The largest furniture import was made from China, the other biggest power in the world
The United States, which ranks first in furniture imports among the countries included in the report, imported approximately 44 billion dollars in 2021. United States of America imported furniture worth 25 billion dollars in 2012, 27 billion dollars in 2013, 29 billion dollars in 2014,32 billion dollars in 2015, 33 billion dollars in 2016, 36 billion dollars in 2017,39 billion dollars in 2018 and 36 billion dollarrs in 2019 and 2020.
The USA made the most furniture imports from China, which is one of the biggest players in the furniture industry, in 2021. The United States, which realizes 36 percent of its total furniture imports from China, 25.4 percent from Vietnam, 7.4 percent from Canada, 6.5 percent from Mexico, 4.7 percent from Malaysia, 3.1 percent from Taiwan and Italy 3.1, 2.6 percent from Indonesia, 1.5 percent from Thailand and 1.4 percent from India. In addition, the USA is expected to grow by 4% in domestic sales by the end of 2022 and by 3% by the end of 2023.
Machinery imports worth 1 billion 770 million dollars
The United States, which is one of the largest markets in the woodworking machinery industry as it is in the furniture industry, realized a total import of 1 billion 770 million dollars at the end of 2021. The country, which purchased woodworking machines worth 1 billion 351 million dollars in 2020, was realized as 1 billion 454 million dollars in 2019. The USA imported the most saw machines with 870 million 912 thousand dollars in 2021. This includes planing, milling or cutting molding machines with 204 million 109 thousand dollars, splitting, slitting or peeling machines with 159 million 488 thousand dollars, grinding, sanding or polishing machines with 138 million 438 thousand dollars, with 118 million 670 thousand dollars, machines that perform various machine operations without changing tools between these operations followed.
Turkey needs to increase its share
When the export rates of Turkey to the USA are analyzed, it is seen that it can get a very small share of the cake. At the end of 2021, Turkey realized a total of 2 million 879 thousand dollars of machinery exports to the USA. This figure was 1 million 354 thousand dollars in 2020 and 1 million 266 thousand dollars in 2019. Turkey exported the most saw machines to the USA with 1 million 432 thousand dollars. The second most exported machine group was the machines that performed various machine operations without changing tools among these operations. Turkey, which could not export machining centers to the USA in 2019 and 2020, exported 120 thousand dollars in 2021. During the period in question, no exports could be made in splitting, slitting or peeling machines.
